Is this book interesting? Is my reading smooth? Do I have time to read it all—beginning to end? 2. Read Read the first few paragraphs to determine is there is: lots of dialogue, lots of description, and understandable language. 4. Choose If YES, check out and read it. 3 Five-Finger Rule Too Easy: 0 - 1 fingers Just Right: 2 - 3 fingers
Open to a page of the book. Begin reading. Each time you come to a word you don’t know, hold up 1 finger. After you finish reading the page, check to see how many fingers you are holding up. Too Easy: fingers Just Right: fingers Too Hard: fingers

4 THE GOLDILOCKS TEST TOO EASY JUST RIGHT TOO HARD
Have you read it lots of times before? Do you understand the story really well? Do you know almost every word? Can you read it smoothly? JUST RIGHT Is this book new to you? Do you understand a lot of the book? Are there just a few words on a page that you don't know? When you read, are some places smooth and some choppy? TOO HARD Are there more than 5 words on a page that you don't know? Are you confused about what is happening in most of this book? When you read, does it sounds pretty choppy? Is everyone else busy and unable to help you?

5 True or False????? 1.  The first thing I think about is, "Does the book seem fun?" 2.  If I miss half the words on the first page it doesn't matter.  I still can check the book out. 3.  Books that are comfortable are books my friend wants me to read. 4.  In choosing a book, you should be interested enough to want to read the whole book. 5.  Comfortable books are those I can read that are of interest to me, and ones I want to read the whole way through. 6.  It's OK to turn down somebody's suggestion of a book for me to read.

6 I PICK I choose a book Purpose: Why do I want to read the book?
Interest: Does it interest me? Comprehend: Am I understanding what I am reading? Know: I know most of the words!
