2 Patient Assignments With the Charge Nurse:
Outline the expectations of the experience Review the student scope of practice Arrive early to make assignments: 0630 for AM clinicals 1430 for PM clinicals Review patients together to determine if the assignment and acuity will meet your objectives based on the student skill mix

3 Patient Assignments With the Staff Nurses:
Outline the expectations of the experience Review the student scope of practice Communicate throughout the clinical experience Make a plan with the RN if you need assistance, are changing the pt plan, or if have concerns Students and Instructors should check out with the RNs before leaving the floor Clinical Plan of Day relayed to primary nurse should include: Tasks that will be/will not be done during the 8 hour shift Vital signs Medications (IV/PO or both) Charting

4 Medication Administration
Students do not administer medications at VPH

5 Clinical Supervision All students should be accompanied by their clinical instructor the day of clinicals If the instructor leaves the unit, the students must step off Students and instructors should have their school ID as well as a lab coat when entering the unit

6 Social Media Policy: Cell Phones are not permitted in the patient work area. Resources can be found in the fishbowls, med rooms, or on line If they need to use their phone this should be done in the break rooms or off the unit

7 Break Rooms: Improving Perception
Used to provide nursing staff with their mandatory 30 minute uninterrupted breaks Should not be an area to conference with students Should be a work free area Improving Perception Keeping students busy (pt work should be done before paperwork) Decreasing group gatherings and idle chit-chat Being an “on point”, “on location” type of instructor Being respectful sharing common spaces Being respectful of patient situations
