2. IB language & literature…
Is an integrated two year course.
Can be completed at two levels – Higher Level & Standard Level.
Embeds elements of Theory of Knowledge.
Requires you to read ALL of the literary texts, preferably a number of times. We cannot pass you if we suspect you have not done the reading.
Expects you to demonstrate all of the character traits on the IB Learner Profile.

5. Higher level versus standard level
Basically, HL requires you to:
Know two extra texts in detail – The Great Gatsby & selected Poe stories.
Complete extra hours of study in the course.
Write 4 Written Tasks as opposed to 3 for SL.
Compare two texts in Paper 1, rather than responding to one text in SL.
Refer to 2 or 3 texts in Paper 2, rather than just 2 texts in SL.
Has a 2 hour time limit for both Papers 1 & 2, whereas SL has 1.5 hours for both.
Oral assessments are the same for both SL & HL – 1 X IOC & 2 X FOAs.

6. INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS Individual Oral Commentary - 2019
HL & SL complete one Individual Oral Commentary.
Further Oral Presentations – 2018 & 2019
HL & SL complete two Further Oral Presentations, the best of which is included in your overall internal assessment grade. You need to complete at least one more. More on this soon.

7. Individual oral commentary - 2019
Students give a verbal analysis commentary of a text extract or poem which is recorded and sent to the IBO.
Texts are from Part 4 – The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe, A Streetcar Named Desire and Judith Wright’s poetry.
Students will not be told the text or extract beforehand.
There will be two guiding questions accompanying the texts.
20 minutes preparation time, 15 minutes verbal analysis.
Your teacher will ask you questions at the end.
Same for HL & SL.
15% of final grade

8. Further oral activity – 2018 & 2019
Must complete at least two over the course.
The results of the best one are sent to the IBO.
Must be on Parts 1 and 2 of the course.
10 minutes of speaking per person.
Must be based on a primary text.
Can be done in groups or individually.
Visuals, technology, props and sound may be used.
Must write a reflective statement and submit to your teacher.
No need to record and not sent to the IBO.
15% of final grade

9. External assessments – 2018 & 2019
Written Tasks – Written Tasks 1 & 2
HL – complete 2 X WT1 and 2 X WT2 - one WT1and one WT2 sent for assessment.
HL - One WT must be on Part 1 or 2 (Language) , one must be on Part 3 or 4 (Literature).
SL – complete 3 x WT1 – one sent for assessment. No WT2.
SL - One WT must be on Part 1 or 2 (Language) , one must be on Part 3 or 4 (Literature), and the other can be on any part.
Paper 1 and Paper 2 – the exams!

10. Written task 1- Hl & sl – 2018 & 2019
We focus on Parts 1 & 2. Teachers facilitate the process and guide students towards successful ideas only.
Between One word over or under loses 2 marks instantly.
Must write a rationale of words, explaining the decision making process behind the task.      
May be done at home or in school under teacher guidance.
Students choose a text to stimulate ideas, explore the text type conventions, then research idea from course and produce their own text.
While general feedback may be given, the work must be the student's own.
20% of final grade

We focus on the Part 3 texts – Maus and Kitchen – one for each text.
Between words. One word over or under loses 2 marks instantly.
 A critical response to a text which answers one of six prescribed questions.
Must include an outline which contains:
the prescribed question that has been chosen
the title of the text(s) for analysis
the part of the course to which the task refers
three or four key points that explain the particular focus of the task

12. Wt 2 -The six prescribed questions
How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers?
If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ?
How and why is a social group represented in a particular way?
Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text?
How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what purpose?
How has the text borrowed from other texts, and with what effects?

13. EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS – paper 1 (exam) - 2019HL SL
Compare and contrast one of two pairs of texts.
Comment on one of two texts.
2 hours + 5 minutes reading time
1.5 hours + 5 minutes reading time
One of the texts from one of the pairs may be a literary text.
Each individual text is presented with two guiding questions.

15. EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS – paper 2 (exam) - 2019
Answer 1 of 6 essay questions. SL and HL students receive exactly the same 6 questions. HL SL
Answer one question in relation to 2 or 3 of the literary texts studied for Part 3.
Answer one question in relation to both literary texts that were studied for Part 3.
