The Drive for Reform Progressives were unhappy about the changes caused by the Gilded Ages Believed that industrialization and urbanization caused social and political problems Progressives felt the people needed to have a more powerful voice in government and democracy

Reforming Government Progressives wanted to reform the political process to better society New city governments took power away from political machines Progressives also supported a direct primaries- process where the citizens select nominees

Initiative Initiative- gave the people the power to put a proposed new law on the ballot

Referendum Referendum- Allowed citizens to accept or reject laws passed by legislature

Recall Recall- gave people power to remove elected officials
