Section 1: The Cell Cycle Cell Cycle Chp 5.1
2
Do Now! Chapter 5: Cell Growth and Division Section 1: The Cell Cycle What do multicellular organisms use this type of cell division for? Growth and development Producing gametes Halving the number of chromosomes Getting rid of cancer

4
But HOW do cells come from other cells?
Chapter 5: Cell Growth and Division Section 1: The Cell Cycle What are the three parts of the cell theory? 1) The cell is the most basic unit of life 2) All living things are made of cells 3) All cells come from other cells But HOW do cells come from other cells?
5
Why might cells need to make more cells?
Chapter 5: Cell Growth and Division Section 1: The Cell Cycle The Cell Cycle Just like all other forms of life, individual cells (even yours!) go through different stages of growth. Since this process happens over and over again in the daughter cells (the cells that get made), it is called a Cell Cycle. What are the different stages? Why might cells need to make more cells?

Section 1: The Cell Cycle Draw this chart in your notebook. We will fill it out during the next slide!

Gap 1 (G1) Synthesis (S) Gap 2 (G2) and then… MITOSIS! INTERPHASE:
Chapter 5: Cell Growth and Division Section 1: The Cell Cycle INTERPHASE: Gap 1 (G1) Synthesis (S) Gap 2 (G2) and then… MITOSIS!
8
In Gap 1, the cell is growing and carries out its normal functions.
Chapter 5: Cell Growth and Division Section 1: The Cell Cycle Interphase In Gap 1, the cell is growing and carries out its normal functions. The cell also checks to make sure the cell can continue to S phase. During Synthesis, the cell creates a copy of its DNA (doubles its chromosomes).
9
The cell also checks to make sure the duplicated DNA is undamaged.
Chapter 5: Cell Growth and Division Section 1: The Cell Cycle The Cell Cycle In Gap 2, the cell continues growing and carrying out its normal functions. The cell also checks to make sure the duplicated DNA is undamaged. During Mitosis, the cell begins dividing!
