1 Presenting research Presentation tools and considerations for using technology to present at conferences Faye Brockwell Information Services

2 Presenting research Tools Looking professional Adding interest
Preparation

3 Some presentation tools…
PowerPoint Microsoft Sway Prezi Keynote & PowerPoint 2011 Haiku Deck & Office for iPad PowerPoint 2016 is on all pool room machines. Staff and students can download Office and Office apps for iPad. Sway comes with Office 365 accounts. Considerations: Sway and Prezi is web-based so relies on internet connectivity = risk at a conference? Sway and Haiku Deck are more visual – but only paid version can be exported to PowerPoint so, again, internet connectivity needed

4 Looking professional - Structure
Introduce you and your topic Say what you’re going to say Say it Summarise it Invite questions Remind them who you are

5 Looking professional – Slide design
Less is more Ideally 5-6 bullets per slide Key words/phrases not sentences Don't overuse effects Text Simple font like Arial or Helvetica Size 30pt or bigger for large rooms Avoid red or green Leave white space

6 Looking professional – slide design
Avoid: Cartoons Word Art Comic Sans MS Make use of: Themes University of Brighton template SmartArt Spell check Word Art

7 Looking professional – facing forwards
Print handouts with speaker notes Have notes on an iPad Use a wireless mouse or clicker Having speaker notes like these help if you need to be reminded of details I prefer to use Mind Genius on an ipad – as this also allows me to plan and structure my presentation in the first place Use a wireless mouse or pointer to move through the slides – practise doing it

8 Adding interest in PowerPoint
Themes SmartArt Images Video Animation – text and images Audio Charts and graphs

9 Considerations for using video, audio and images
Copyright File type Internet connectivity

10 Preparation is everything
Practise running through with PowerPoint Plan for technology to fail Check what is available Version of PowerPoint Internet connectivity Wireless mouse to allow movement Speakers for sound Flash player if needed

11 Any questions?
