1 Poetry Notes #1 Poetry Basics

2 --poems share a writer’s emotions about a topic --they are compact (but not necessarily short) and generally contain one or more poetic elements --they do NOT have to rhyme What is poetry?

3 What are the two main kinds of poems?
Rhyming Free verse (non-rhyming) What are the two main kinds of poems?

4 What are the parts of a poem?
Verse: a single line of poetry Stanza: a group of lines in a poem separated by spaces (similar to a paragraph) A bird came down the walk: He did not know I saw; He bit an angle-worm in halves And ate the fellow, raw. And then he drank a dew From a convenient grass, And then hopped sidewise to the wall To let a beetle pass. This poem has 8 verses and 2 stanzas. Number the verses and circle the two stanzas. What are the parts of a poem?

5 Rhyme: the repetition of sounds at the ends of words Ex: potato, tomato
What is rhyme?

6 the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem; the beat
What is rhythm?

7 What is Imagery? Words and phrases that appeal to the reader’s 5 senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound
