2 Section 1: Nile River I. Geography A. Located in Northeast Africa B. World’s longest river at 4,000 miles long C. Two sources –Blue Nile begins in Ethiopia, White Nile begins in East Africa D. Two rivers meet in Sudan and flow into the Mediterranean Sea (flowing from South to North) E. The Nile flows through desert, mountains, and farmland (p.70-71) F. The Nile forms a fertile delta near the Mediterranean Sea

4 II. Communities Settled hunting and fishing communities probably appeared in Nubia around 6000 BC Farming communities formed in Egypt and Nubia around 5000 BC in the delta and valley regions of the Nile In Upper Egypt, scattered farming villages were built along the banks of the Nile

5 III. Trade Ships sailed up and down the Nile to trade goods
Other trade routes ran across the desert to the Red Sea or Mesopotamia Goods such as gold, silver, copper, fine pottery, and cedar were carried on the trade routes One overland trade route carried goods from central Africa and Nubia into Egypt through the Nile Valley
