Earth-- Sun Relationships
Seasons
2
At East High; Harrisburg Pa, USA, Northern Hemisphere
What season is it? When did it occur? What season is next? What is the earth sun relationship for the Northern Hemisphere? What is common weather for our winter? How are daylight and winter weather related?
3
Seasons Define the following terms: Summer solstice Winter solstice
Autumnal equinox Spring equinox
4
Seasons Summer solstice—solstice that occurs on the June 21-22, in the Northern Hemisphere and Dec in the Southern Hemisphere. Winter solstice— solstice that occurs on Dec in the Northern Hemisphere and June in the Southern Hemisphere Autumnal equinox— the equinox that occurs on Sept in the Northern Hemisphere, and March in the Southern Hemisphere Spring equinox—the equinox that occurs on March in the Northern Hemisphere and Sept in the Southern Hemisphere. Equinox means “equal night”

Seasons On the paper provided copy figure page 445 from your text. Then copy and answer these questions Questions: What is the general process that causes the seasons? Is the Earth closer to the sun in the Northern Hemisphere's winter or summer? What is the relationship between the Earth and the sun during each of the four seasons in your home region?

Questions: What is the general process that causes the seasons? Earth’s revolution around the sun and it axis of inclination (23.5°) Is the Earth closer to the sun in the Northern Hemisphere's winter or summer? In it’s summer What is the relationship between the Earth and the sun during each of the four seasons in your home region? Winter—(Dec.), Earth tilts away from the sun; sun is directly over latitude 23.5° S; shortest days less direct heating from sun; harsh weather Spring—(March), western hemisphere tilted towards sun; sun vertical over equator; daylight gradually increasing, weather becoming more moderate; beginning of growing season Summer—(June); Northern Hemisphere tilted towards sun; sun over 23.5° N; longest days; weather temperate, storms; agricultural season Fall—(Sept.); western hemisphere tilted away from sun; sun over equator; daylight shortening; harvest; weather moderate

Seasons Check for understanding:
Why does winter , in terms of weather, really start before winter solstice, Dec ?

Seasons Check for understanding:
Why does winter , in terms of weather, really start before winter solstice, Dec ? Meteorological winter (weather concept)… the temperature is low, daylight is shortened, precipitation may be in the form of frozen precipitation. Astronomical winter is described by the winter solstice.
