1 Bell Ringer: 02/27/17 Objective: Use appropriate terminology in the context of studying chemistry, including atom, element, molecule, and compound. Question: Write the photosynthesis equation.

2 Where can I find chemicals in my body?
A chemical is a substance that is made up of elements/molecules and used in chemical reactions.

3 KEY TERMS

4 Atoms are the basic building blocks of ALL matter in the universe!
Atom: Smallest particle of an element that still has all of the properties of that element Atoms are the basic building blocks of ALL matter in the universe!

5 Element: Single substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
What are some elements you know?

6 Compound/Molecule: The chemical combination of two or more elements.
Can you think of any other compounds? What elements can you pull out of these compounds?

7 Chemical Formula vs. Structural Formula
Chemical Formula: Each element is represented by its chemical symbol and the number o atoms is shown in its subscripts. Ex. H2O, CO2, CH4, C6H12O6 Structural Formula: shows the chemical symbol of each element and how they are bonded to one another.

8 Organic vs Inorganic Organic: Usually composed of carbon and hydrogen. “Organic Chemistry” means the study of carbon- containing compounds. Inorganic: They do not contain bonds between carbon atoms

9 Organic Inorganic C6H12O6 : Sugar C2H6 : Ethane C5H10O5 : Ribose
C3H8O3 : Glycerol H2O : Water CO2 : Carbon Dioxide NaCO2- : Sodium Carbonate O2 : Oxygen Water is the most important inorganic compound. Most organisms are 60-90% water by weight.

10 Intro to biochemistry individual practice
Need: Worksheet, Chromebook, Writing Utensil

11 What is a polysaccharide?
Define polysaccharide. Provide some examples of polysaccharides. How do we create a polysaccharide? Where can we find polysaccharides? What are they used for? How do we test for polysaccharides?

12 Identifying polysaccharides
GOGGLES!!!!!! Be clean  Let me know if you have questions.
