February 23, Math 102 OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to determine the surface area of prisms and cylinders, using a calculator and a variety of methods AIM: How can our knowledge of two dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, and circles) help us find the surface area of prisms and cylinders? STANDARDS: 7.G.4 PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Find the area of a rectangle whose length is 10 inches and width is 6 inches.

MINI LESSON: Surface Area – area outside Face Rectangular Prism Base Method 1: Add the areas of the 6 faces

SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh Method 2: Use the formula for surface area l =

Diameter Base Cylinder Base Method 1: Add the areas of the two bases and the circular tube

Find the area and circumference of the base
C = πd, or C = 2πr Find the area of the circular tube Circumference x height =

Add the area of the two bases and the circular tube
Method 2: Use the formula for the surface area of a cylinder

Example What is the surface area of the cylinder below? Use 3.14 for π r = 30 cm Formula: SA = 2πr2 + 2πrh h = 40 cm

Example If the height of a cylinder is 50 m and its diameter is 60 m, what is its surface area? Formula: SA = 2πr2 + 2πrh

Homework A soda can is 15 cm in height, with a diameter of 8 cm. What is the surface area of the can? Use 3.14 for π Formula: SA = 2πr2 + 2πrh
