Intestinal malabsorption of fat reduces gut motility and increases oro-caecal transit time (OCTT) in a mechanism dependent on the ileal brake. Plasma levels of PYY, neurotensin and enteroglucagon are increased in this scenario. Lengthier OCTT in turn promotes bacterial overgrowth. Ghoshal, U. C. & Gwee, K.-A.
