1 In life we have to accept authority even if we don’t agree with something.

2 Respect Accepting authority

3 Which one is you? Is this you?

4 What is Respect? You can have respect for someone because you admire something about them You can have respect for someone’s feelings, their wishes or their rights You can have respect for things other than humans or things that aren’t living

5 Why should we have RESPECT?
Do we like people to be rude to us? Do we like people to ignore us? Do we like people to hurt us? Do we like people to not trust us? Do we like people to take our things? Do we like people to break or spoil our things? Do we like people to mess up our special places? Do we like people to spoil our experiences? We can’t expect to be respected unless we show RESPECT.

6 Why are we talking about respect?
British values Success Feel better Caring society Your grades could go up You will be recognised and reward by school/parents Chances of success in all walks of life improves. Good things happen to those who respect others. When we meet parents to talk about a lack of respect, many say that they didn’t bring their children up to be disrespectful.

7 The Rule of Law Living in Britain to keep everyone safe we have British Values Democracy Tolerance/ Respect for others Individual Liberty Respecting and Upholding the Rule of Law

8 Our values, our rules We have school rules that help everyone stay safe and happy They apply to everyone and are enforced the same for everyone e.g. If anyone hurts someone they get the same consequence (it doesn’t matter who you are) Oakwood is firm but fair. Imagine a football match without rules. Imagine transport on the road without rules.

9 5Rs The 5Rs are fundamental to everything we do at Oakwood. Let’s have a look at how this House is doing so far this year. If your year group are the best, well done!

10 Accepting authority We are in the same team
Pupils and staff are not equals Staff have a job to do Experience cannot be bought We want the best for you We have to say things that you don’t really want to hear. We are in the same team Sometimes it is hard to accept what you are being told. You might disagree or might think it is personal. Staff at Oakwood have a job to do and we show that we care by giving you attention and time to praise and reprimand. We want you to do well and we want the school to be the best.

11 Authority figures A civilised society is allowed to continue it’s day to day operations by having people in positions of authority. Would you argue with your doctor if they told you something you didn’t like? They all have a job to do and respecting their role will maintain a functioning society.

12 School staff! Teachers are always at the top of any survey about “which authority figures can you trust?”

13 College You have agreed to:
• Behave in a respectful and considerate manner when in College, or when taking part in College activities or when in the College neighbourhood; • Be aware of and respect the needs of other people and treat everyone as an individual regardless of age, ethnic origin, gender, disability, learning difficulties, class, religion or sexual orientation in accordance with the 2010 Equality Act; • Follow the College policy on smoking • Take care of your own and other people’s property. • Eat and drink only in the designated areas; • Respect and take care of the College’s facilities and environment; You have agreed not to: • Behave in an aggressive or intimidating manner or with intent to cause harassment to another person; • Behave in a way that is unacceptable, for example using offensive and inappropriate language, dropping litter, spitting or gambling; • Be in possession of or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs whilst around the College or whilst involved in any College activity; College How it works in College and workplace. Part of TRC learning agreement

14 Workplace

15 Leisure time Gym Cinema https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43AdWFSXhgs
Rules apply away from education and the workplace. It’s a way of considering other people. Respect the referee clip. Teachers talk like the referee at times. See how respect is given by the players.

16 Reward and consequence points on G4S
Negative Positive Failed to show respect -1 Failed to follow instructions first time, every time -2 Argued with a member of staff -3 Disrespectful to a member of staff -3 Continued to argue with a member of staff -4 Respect +1 Helped a pupil/member of staff +2 Accepted a member of staff’s reprimand without arguing +3 Role model to others +4

17 Examples of times when people fail to accept authority.
Mistake Response to make it worse Outdoor coat in the building Leave the classroom before the bell Using phone on site Low-level chatter in class Detention for not completing homework Ignoring staff or slowly taking it off Refusal to stay behind when called back by teacher Refusal to hand it over on request Continuing to talk Arguing with the teacher about the detention Most times a pupil will break a school rule by mistake. We have to point it but do not make it worse.

18 How to get it right when it goes wrong
Make an effort to show respect. If you have done something, admit you know it was wrong. Be honest with people Say “ok” even if you feel aggrieved A bad situation can get better if you work with us. The pupil’s who have a high conduct total don’t always get it right, but when they get it wrong, they don’t make it worse. Rather than arguing, accept what is being said and move on. If you feel aggrieved see your PLT or HOH.

19 The majority get it right!
Our pupils work with the staff to succeed. Our pupils are pleasant to staff The majority of pupils do not argue with staff. Many more reward points than consequence points are given by staff each week. This school is a good school. Other school’s in Rotherham say we have a good reputation. The community know we are a good school. We are heading in the right direction because people are “on the bus.”

20 Respect and accept!
