1 Lesson 2.3 Subtracting Rational Numbers
Day 1 Lesson 2.3 Subtracting Rational Numbers Students will be able to subtract rational numbers CCSS.7.NS.1d

2 Warm-Up #26 (10/25/16) − = 10.34 – 13.4 = Classify Is it a rational number? Is it an integer?

3 Homework (10/25/16) Textbook: Big Ideas Page 62 #3-12 ALL

4 Homework Solutions 5. −9 5 =− − = = 1 4 13. Line up the decimals wrong 14. Add wrong

5 Example 1 Change subtraction to adding the opposite.
Get a common denominator. Subtract and keep sign of the larger number.

6 Example 2 Change subtraction to adding the opposite.
Get a common denominator and subtract.

7 EXAMPLE 3 3 4 1 3 - 9 12 -4 12 5 12 + =

8 EXAMPLE 3 4 1 3 - 4 12 -9 12 -5 12 9 – 4 = 5 ( KEEP SIGN OF THE LARGER NUMBER) = +

9 EXAMPLE 4 3 4 -1 5 -

10 EXAMPLE 3 4 -1 5 - 3 4 1 5 +

11 3 4 -1 5 3 4 1 5 15 20 4 20 EXAMPLE - + COMMON DENOMINATOR TO +
SUBTRACT FRACTIONS +

12 EXAMPLE 3 4 -1 5 - 3 4 1 5 = 19 (KEEP THE SIGN OF THE LARGER NUMBER) + 15 20 4 20 19 20 = +

13 Example 5 -3 4 -1 5 -

14 -3 4 -1 5 - -3 4 1 5 +

15 -3 4 -1 5 If the BIGGER number is FIRST then the result = NEGATIVE - -3 4 1 5 + -15 20 4 20 COMMON DENOMINATOR TO SUBTRACT FRACTIONS +

16 -3 4 -1 5 If the BIGGER number is FIRST then the result = NEGATIVE - -3 4 1 5 + -11 20 -15 20 4 20 = 11 (KEEP THE SIGN OF THE LARGER NUMBER) = +

17 Example 6 13 – (1.34) =

18 Example 7 -3.42 – 45.2 =

27 Which one has more leftover?

28 Ordering Rational Numbers
There are 2 ways to order from least to greatest: Get a common denominator and then look at the numerator to determine which is one greater. Change the fractions to decimals (numerator  denominator)

29 Which rational number is bigger?
1) Get a common denominator. 2) Or convert the fraction to a decimal. < 4 1 < 3 8 THEREFORE…

30 Which rational number is bigger?
7 4 or 1 6 42 24 < 44 Get a common denominator or convert to a decimal 1.75 < 1.83 THEREFORE…

31 Stand Quietly

32 Word Problems for Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers
Day 3 Word Problems for Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers Students will be able to solve real-life problems using addition and subtraction operations.

33 Warm-Up #27 (10/27/2016) Which symbol makes this true (<, >, =)? Evaluate 4 7 − 5 12 What is the circumference of a circle is the radius is 2 inches.
