Light and Reflection By: Derek Anderson & Alex Walker
2
Characteristics of Light
Light is made up of electromagnetic waves Speed of 299,700,000 meters per second or roughly 300,000,000 m/s
3
Electromagnetic Waves
Electromagnetic Waves- consist of oscillating magnetic and oscillating electric fields Types of electromagnetic waves vary depending on frequency and wavelength
4
Types of Electromagnetic Waves
5
Wave Speed Equation c = f x h Speed of light = frequency x wavelength This equation is used to determine what the frequency or wavelength of a wave is when one or the other is absent.
6
Practice Problem The brightest light detected from a star has a frequency of about 3 x 10 Hz. What is the wavelength of this light? 9
7
Reflection Diffuse reflection- light reflected from a rough, textured surface reflects in many different directions Specular reflection- light reflected from a smooth, shiny surface reflects in only one direction
8
Reflection (cont’d) Angle of incidence- the angle between a ray that strikes a surface and the line perpendicular to that surface Angle of reflection- the angle formed by the line perpendicular and the direction in which a reflected ray moves
9
Concave & Convex Spherical Mirrors
Concave spherical mirrors- a mirror whose reflecting surface is a segment of the inside of a sphere Convex spherical mirrors- a mirror whose reflecting surface is an outward-curved segment of a sphere
10
Color Spectrums Additive primary colors- red, green, blue
Subtractive primary colors- cyan, yellow, magenta
