The Nervous System What is its FUNCTION?
Receives information about what’s happening inside and outside the body. Directs the way your body responds to this info. Helps maintain homeostasis.
6
The Nervous System Brain Spinal Cord
The nervous system is made up of the: Brain Spinal Cord Network of Nerves that branch out to ALL parts of your body
7
A Neuron (Nerve Cell) AXON DENDRITES CELL BODY AXON TIPS Neurons carry information through the nervous system. There are BILLIONS of neurons in your body. They are constantly sending/receiving messages. The message that a neuron carries is a nerve impulse.
8
Nervous system Endocrine system Collect Process Respond
9
The Endocrine System Pituitary gland – in the brain
Hypothalamus gland – in the brain Parathyroid gland – in the neck Thyroid gland – in the neck Thymus gland – in the chest / heart region Pancreas– in the trunk / main body region Adrenal glands – on the top of each kidney Ovaries (girls) and testes (boys)– in the reproductive organs
10
The Endocrine System The Functions of the Endocrine System: The endocrine system produces __________________that control many of the body’s daily activities. The endocrine system also _____________ long-term changes such as ______________ and ______________. chemicals regulates growth development
11
The Endocrine System Made of… The endocrine system is made up of _____________, organs that _______________________ a chemical. Some glands, such as those that produce _________________________ release their chemicals into tiny tubes. The tubes deliver the chemicals to a _______________________ within the body or ________________________________. glands produces or releases saliva and sweat specific location to the skin’s surface
12
Make a connection How are the endocrine and reproductive systems related?
14
Reproduction Function:
To allow the species to pass down genetic information. Sexual reproduction: Pairing creates a new mix of genetic information. Asexual reproduction: is an identical copy of genetic information.
15
Sexual Asexual No partner needed. Original makes a copy of itself and portion splits or breaks away to be the new organism. Two parts each offer ½ of the combination needed. The new combo grows with it’s own “original” characteristics.
16
SPERM The process by which new organisms are produced. OVA or EGG
Sex Cell Fertilization Fertilized egg = ZYGOTE
17
M F F M Sex cell made inside testes (1/2 DNA)
Sex organs where eggs grow BEFORE fertilization F M This word is not in the book for some reason. Pocket of skin that holds the testes
18
Scrotum
19
The Menstrual Cycle “Monthly” cycle of changes in the female reproductive system. How the body prepares for pregnancy.
20
What happens after the egg is fertilized?
The Human Life Cycle What happens after the egg is fertilized? The egg is fertilized in the fallopian tubes. This cell travels for 5 days and divides many times before it enters the uterus. In the uterus, it attaches to the lining and begins to develop.

Video Let’s see how the reproductive system is affecting you most directly now.
