General rules Essays should always be typed, double-spaced with 1” margins on all sides. Use 12 point Times-New Roman font Papers should include a page header or running head. [Formatting note: This header should be located in the header of each page. The first page should include the words “Running title:” followed by the title of your paper. All other pages should just include the name of your paper] There are four sections of each paper: Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, References

In-text Citations Only capitalize all words in a title that are four letters or longer unless they are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs Capitalize both words in a hyphenated compounds or after a dash or colon Italicize the titles of books, movies, television series, documentaries or music albums Put quotation marks around the title of articles in a larger work When citing in your text, put the name of the author followed by the year in parenthesis (Rice, 2013) or According to Rice (2013), … (Casablanca, 1942) or In Casablanca (1942), …

Reference Page Author’s names are inverted and only initials are used for first names. Alphabetize by last name of the first author If using multiple works by the same author, put them in chronological order Capitalize all major words in journal titles For books, articles, web pages, etc. capitalize only the first word in the title Italicize longer works such as books and movies Do not use quotation marks around the titles of shorter works within a larger work (ie. Article titles, episode titles)
