2. Proportion
Proportion is used to describe the ratio of one part to another part or to the whole.
For example: all the parts of a piano are in proportion to one another.
The parts of a chair (arms, legs, back, and seat) should be proportional to each other and to the chair as a whole.

3. Proportion
Furniture or decorations need to be in proportion to the size of the room.
Don’t want a large piece of furniture in a small room
Don’t want a small piece of furniture in a large room.
The most effective proportions have an uneven ratio of 2:3, 3:5, or 5:8.

5. The Golden Mean
Good system for determining proportion was devised by the Greeks.
A square room is the least pleasing proportion for an enclosure.
A rectangle, with its sides in a ration 2:3 is most pleasing.

6. The golden ratio is expressed in spiraling shells
The golden ratio is expressed in spiraling shells. In the above illustration, areas of the shell's growth are mapped out in squares. If the two smallest squares have a width and height of 1, then the box to their left has measurements of 2. The other boxes measure 3, 5, 8 and 13.

7. The Golden Mean
A series of numbers that progress by the sum of the two previous numbers.
2:3, 3:5, 8:13, 13:21

10. Scale
Scale relates to the absolute size of an object or space compared to other things.
For example: a lamp would not be larger than a sofa.
The scale of an object is usually described as large or small, relative to another object.

11. Scale
To achieve good scale, choose objects that are appropriate for human dimensions and the proper size for the space they occupy.
When choosing furnishings, remember that large rooms require large-scale furnishings, while smaller rooms require small-scale pieces.

The human scale is an important consideration in interior design. Most people are between five and six feet tall and weigh between 100 and 200 pounds. Living spaces that are correctly scaled make people feel comfortable.
