15 Mindful Critics Review

16 Martin Luther As a monk, Luther became frustrated with the corruption and immorality (bad behavior) of the Catholic priests. Believed in salvation by faith alone, not based on works or good behavior. This went against Catholic teaching of indulgences for forgiveness. Nailed the 95 Theses (95 arguments against the Church) on a church door to dispute behavior of the Catholic Church. Thanks to the printing press, these arguments spread throughout Europe in just a few months, which started the Protestant Reformation. Was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Transcribed the New Testament into the German language for commoners to read and share.

17 John Calvin A law student who published the Institutes of the Christian Religion, a text that still impacts Christianity to this day Believed strongly in the power of the Holy Bible and a concept called predestination, a belief that God chooses who will enter Heaven based on his all-knowing nature and grace. Established a religious government in Geneva, Switzerland Punished (executed) those who did not agree with his religious beliefs.

18 Desiderius Erasmus Important figure of the humanist movement
Translated the New Testament into Greek Believed that Christians should have a personal relationship with God but did not agree with harsh methods and strict rules of the Catholic Church Believed that Classical learning (literature, grammar, history, etc.) encouraged better living and helped people better understand each other

19 William Tyndale Strong supporter of Catholic church reform
Believed that the Bible should lead the Church’s behavior and teachings and that people should be able to read the Bible in their own language Translated the Bible into English, which was forbidden by the Church at this time Accused of heresy by the Catholic Church Eventually executed for his translation of the Bible

20 Class Closure Why were people growing discontent (unhappy) with the Catholic Church? Explain how one of these people responded to this discontent in their own unique way(s).
