Observational Studies, Experiments, and Simple Random Sampling
Lesson 1 - 3 Observational Studies, Experiments, and Simple Random Sampling
2
Objectives Obtain a stratified sample Obtain a systematic sample
Obtain a cluster sample
3
Vocabulary Stratified sample – separating the population into nonoverlapping groups strata and then obtaining a simple random sample from each stratum. Each stratum should be homogeneous (or similar) in some way. Systematic sample – selecting every kth individual from the population; first selected individual is randomly selected from individuals 1 through k Cluster sample – selecting all individuals within a randomly selected collection or group Convenience sample – sample in which data is easily obtained
4
Four sources of data Census Existing sources Survey sampling
Designed experiments
5
Four basic sampling techniques
Simple random sampling (SRS) Stratified sampling Some of all Cluster sampling All of some Systematic sampling
6
Summary and Homework Summary Homework
Stratified and cluster sampling are different Convenience sampling results are generally suspect Homework pg 30-32: 9-21 (odd only), 27, 30
