1 1 Restless Earth 01 Earth Structure

2 Earth Structure video

3 Key word for today Asthenosphere Greek astheno = weak

4 Other key words Lithosphere Crust, mantle, core Continental crust
Oceanic crust Granite Basalt Gabbro Quartz and feldspar Viscous Plate tectonics Ridge (MOR) Subduction Zone Convection currents Iron and nickel

5 Cross section view of the Earth
Pupils self assess their diagram add or correct anything Explain different layers Solid liquid etc www/.ebi accuracy/neatness Cross section view of the Earth

6 What is the Earth made from?
By the end of this section, you will: Be able to identify what the Earth is made of. Understand how these layers fit together. Learn more details about the Earth’s structure.

7 Looking into the Earth The worksheet Earth Structure accompanies this slide.

8 Across the Earth

9 Structurally sound?

10 Annotate 1 -5 Can you add thickness in Km at A,B,C,D ?
Could brainstorm first to get some key words 1- crust 2-mantle 3a- outer core 3b-inner core 4- lithosphere 5 -asthenosphere B C D

11 Sticky viscous dense rocks
Asthenosphere Sticky viscous dense rocks Lithosphere (solid rock) Explain the movement of the solid crust and upper mantle (LITHOSPHERE) Below the lithosphere sticky viscous and dense rock of the mantle compare to soup. Convection currents are driven by heat from the Core. In upper part of mantle asthenosphere the flows affect the lithosphere causing earthquakes and volcanoes NEXT LESSON WILL COVER CONVECTION CURRENTS ETC

15 Plenary What are the differences between oceanic and continental crust? (in book) Allow time to complete this task as it is important that students are able to write a longer answer on next slidefrom activity 2 SB

16 Answer (copy) Oceanic crust is denser than continental crust (1 mark). Because of this, oceanic crust can subduct, continental cannot (1 mark). Oceanic crust is also usually much ‘thinner (1mark) – 8km v up to 100km (1 mark). It is composed of different rocks (continental = mainly granite (1 mark), oceanic = basalt and gabbro (1 mark)) WWW /EBI

17 Homework (for Tuesday)
Read p12-13 (if not done in lesson) Draw Figure 1 (earth cross-section) – or print from internet , glue in and label fully Activity 1 (clear and concise but detailed) Activity 2 EXTENSION Search YouTube on “Earth Structure” and watch a few of the video clips AND / OR... Research the meanings of ridge push and slab pull
