What is a right triangle?
hypotenuse leg right angle leg It is a triangle which has an angle that is 90 degrees. The two sides that make up the right angle are called legs. The side opposite the right angle is the hypotenuse.
4
The Pythagorean Theorem: A tool for right triangle problems only
When do I need to use the Pythagorean Theorem? When I know: length of 2 sides and need to know: length of 3rd side
5
What is the Pythagorean Theorem?
c a b Where a and b are legs and c is the hypotenuse

A Pythagorean Puzzle c²=a²+b² c² b²
This is called Pythagoras’ Theorem. a²
27
Find the length of the missing leg.
4 cm 10 cm 42 + b2 = 102 16 + b2 = 100 b2 = 84 The leg is about 9.2 cm long.
28
Find the length of the missing leg.
a = 132 a = 169 a2 = 25 The leg is 5 inches long.
29
Find the length of the hypotenuse if a = 12 and b = 16.
= c2 = c2 400 = c2 Take the square root of both sides. 20 = c
30
Find the length of the hypotenuse if a = 5 and b = 7.
= c2 = c2 74 = c2 Take the square root of both sides. 8.60 = c
31

42 + b2 = 102 16 + b2 = 100 Solve for b. 16 - 16 + b2 = 100 - 16
Find the length of the leg, to the nearest hundredth, ifa = 4 and c = 10. 42 + b2 = 102 16 + b2 = 100 Solve for b. b2 = b2 = 84 b = 9.17
33
a2 + 72 = 102 a2 + 49 = 100 Solve for a. a2 = 100 - 49 a2 = 51
Find the length of the leg, to the nearest hundredth, if 4. c = 10 and b = 7. a = 102 a = 100 Solve for a. a2 = a2 = 51 a = 7.14
