AMCP-OSU Chapter Info Session 10/17/2016
2
P&T Pharmacy and Therapeutics (Not pharmacology and therapeutics)
Hospital systems, insurance providers etc. have P&T committees to determine if they should add a drug to formulary or not Take into consideration the cost and efficacy of the drug to determine if there is an improvement in health outcomes and if it is worth the money
3
Background Formulary: Prior Authorization:
list of prescription drugs used by practitioners to identify drugs that offer the greatest overall value (efficacy and cost.) A committee of physicians, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists maintain the formulary Prior Authorization: requirement that your physician obtain approval from your health insurance plan to prescribe a specific medication. PA is a technique for minimizing costs, as benefits are only paid if the medical care has been pre-approved by the insurance company
4
What Is The P&T Competition
Real world experience of formulary management Understanding how to utilize medical and research data for health-care system outcomes Working with scientific evidence to determine efficacy and economics of patient population Utilizing disease state guidelines to determine efficacy of drug Broadening your scope of pharmacy to international regulations of drugs to determine efficacy of treatment
5
Why Is The P&T Competition Important
Learn how to determine the best treatment outcomes for a patient population Ensure that patients can get the best possible treatment Understand the steps that a health-care system needs to take to add a drug on its formulary Realize the importance of both efficacy and cost to a health-care system Quality-Adjusted Life-Year (QALY) Life expectancy adjusted based on utility QALY = time in health state × utility of state
6
Advantages of the Competition
Experience the process to Prior Authorization and how to get a drug to formulary Apply Drug Information searching to real world situations More competitive for Internships, Fellowships, and Residencies
