1 NIGERIAN FOOD COMPOSITION TABLE/DATABASE
Global Challenges Research Fund workshop on Production, Management and Use of Food Composition Data to support AFROFOODS University of Pretoria 5th- 9th February 2018 NIGERIAN FOOD COMPOSITION TABLE/DATABASE U Organisation information The Department of Human Nutrition, University of Ibadan has been designated as the Centre of Excellence in Food Composition Activities in Nigeria. The goals of the designation are; research, compilation, dissemination, training in Food Composition Information/activities. The production of the Nigerian Food Composition Table/Database Version 1.0 launched in September, 2017 was mainly funded through generous grant from Nestle Nigeria Plc. Prior to the launching; A hands-on training on use of INFOODS/ FAO Compilation Tool was conducted in December, 2013 where trained researchers from the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria were in attendance. These trained researchers formed the Nigeria Food Composition Network (NiFOODS), each zone was mobilised to collate published and unpublished data on food composition. A technical secretariat at the Centre handled in-coming data with a Coordinator and a technical team. Evaluation of data was based on veracity of sampling methods and samples, analytical methods and results. The food data were taken through the archival, reference and user phases. Current work The database contains 282 food items classified into seventeen (17) food groups and 28 food contents (proximate, minerals, vitamins) were listed. The database covers essentially all the staples in the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. A list of local names where available was provided. Energy and nutrients content of edible portions were recorded. Where data were not available or complete, data was borrowed or imported from standard food composition references. Many identified gaps were filled appropriately from other food compositional databases. It is currently in the paper and e-version format and the database can be accessed at <nigeriafooddata.ui.edu.ng> Future plans and Challenges In preparation for version 2 of the Nigerian Food Composition Table/Database, the following are the future plans; Need for more analytical data on foods consumed in Nigeria to fill the gaps in Version 1.0 Training and Re-training of compilers of Food composition in Sampling, analysis and recipe calculation There is a perceived need for standardised recipe for staples, soups and other foods Identification of centres where credible, relevant, accurate analyses of foods can be done Proposal to include manufactured foods in Version 2.0 Funds and grants mobilization for proposed activities of the Centre. Outcomes Training in appropriate sampling techniques to yield representative sampling. Linkages with analytical laboratories with expertise on foods analyses Recipe calculation and tools Linkages with other resources and networks. *1Sanusi, R.A; 2Ene-Obong, H.N and 1Leshi, O Department of 1Human Nutrition, University of Ibadan; 2Biochemistry, University of Calabar, Nigeria . *1Sanusi, R.A; 2Ene-Obong, H.N and 1Leshi, O 1Department of Human Nutrition, University of Ibadan; 2 Department of Biochemistry, University of Calabar, Nigeria
