Starter: Using an Atlas find the Hawaiian islands
Starter: Using an Atlas find the Hawaiian islands. The Hawaiian islands have been created by volcanic activity but there is no plate boundary in the middle of the Pacific so how have these islands been formed? Consider Plate Tectonic theory and come up with an explanation

Unit 3: Hot Spots Lesson Objectives:
To understand what Hot spots are and how they create volcanic islands. Success Criteria: Create a revision card on Hot spots. Add Hot spots to your plate tectonic theory evidence
3
Vulcanicity is not always associated with plate margins.
Hot spots are caused by a concentration of radioactive elements in the mantle. Plumes of lava rise up eating into the plate above. Active volcanoes are formed where the lava breaks through the crust on the hot spot. e.g. The Hawaiian Islands. The hot spot is stationary so as the Pacific plate moves over it a chain of volcanic islands is formed. Hawaii- volcanic island Hawaiian Islands Pacific Ocean Plate movement 10cm/yr Kauai older island 3.8 million years The trail of underwater mountains created as the the tectonic plate moved across the Hawaii hotspot over millions of years, known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, or the Emperor Seamounts.

Task: Create a revision card on Hot Spots
Task: Create a revision card on Hot Spots. Include: a Diagram of a hot spot, an example eg Hawaii, an explanation of what happens at a hot spot.

Plenary: Add a paragraph to your assessment of continental drift theory to include Hot Spots
