Discuss these images with students – what do they represent? Through the discussion lead the students to a definition of a social issue. This is roughly: Social issues are problems that affect some people, or certain groups, in society.

Read out the Case Study and ask students to write out the social issues as they are mentioned. Ask students to draw links of cause and effect between the boxes.

As a class, brainstorm the social issues in your local area.

Get students into teams of 4-6 students
Get students into teams of 4-6 students. Ask them to decide upon a top social issue that they think is important to address.

There is a back up plan should students become stuck about what to choose.

Set small homework task for next lesson.

Ask students to turn to the back of the books to page 44 – ask them to tick which professional skills they think they have developed. Share with the rest of the class.
