1 3 States of Matter Solids, Liquids, Gases

2 Matter and Particles Matter is everything that has mass & takes up space Matter includes things we can easily observe Matter also includes things not easily seen Mass is the amount of matter something contains. For example: an elephant has a lot of mass; a leaf doesn’t have much mass but both are matter. Matter is made up of small bits called particles.

3 Particles are so small they can only be seen with the strongest microscopes.

4 Particles are arranged to form the states of matter:
Solids Liquids Gases

5 Solids have a specific shape take up a definite amount of space
particles are very close together. Particles are very tight and stay close to their neighbor. They move together around one single point.

6

7 Liquids take the shape of its container
take up a definite amount of space Particles slip and slide around each other.

8

9 Gas have no specific shape take up no definite amount of space
always fill the container it is in Particles do not stay close together. They move around very fast.
