1 States of Matter

2 Solid Definite volume and shape Particles tightly packed together
Particles have little motion, vibrate only Strong attraction between particles

3

4 Liquid Definite volume Takes shape of container
Particles move (flow) past each other Particle attraction is not as strong as in solids

5

6 Gas No definite shape or volume Particles are far apart
Particles move in random motions quickly Little or no particle attraction

7

8 Plasma Gas with a charge Most abundant in universe Ex: stars
Conducts electricity and can produce a magnetic field

9 Matter can change states by adding or removing energy.
1. Solid Liquid = Melting 2. Liquid Solid = Freezing 3. Liquid Gas = Evaporation 4. Gas Liquid = Condensation 5. Solid Gas = Sublimation 6. Gas Solid = Deposition (desublimation) Write an example of each!

10 Matter changes states when you add or remove heat.
Matter changes state when the amount of energy changes.

11 Change of state is a physical change!

12 The Law of the Conservation of Mass- Matter can change forms but the total mass doesn’t change. Matter can’t be created or destroyed, only change forms.
