What is an Adverb? An adverb is a word that describes or modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb

Adverbs modify verbs: Example: Good drivers turn that corner slowly.

Adverbs modify adjectives:
Example: Really good drivers turn that corner slowly. “good” is an adjective modifying drivers “really” is an adverb modifying “good”

Adverbs sometimes modify other adverbs:
Example: Good drivers turn that corner very slowly. “slowly” is an adverb describing the verb “turn” “very” is an adverb describing the adverb “slowly”

Adverbs usually answer the following questions:
How? Where? When? To what extent?

Examples of Adverbs that answer the question “How?”
Jason ran quickly. How did Jason run? – quickly The two cars crashed loudly. How did the two cars crash?– loudly Mikayla opened her present eagerly. How did she open her present? – eagerly Note: How does each adverb end?

Examples of Adverbs that answer the question “Where?”
The geese flew overhead. Where did the geese fly? – overhead The boy was playing downstairs. Where was he playing? -- downstairs It was raining outside. Where was it raining? --outside

Examples of Adverbs that answer the question “When?”
Mr. Brown arrived late. When did Mr. Brown arrive? -- late The teacher assigns homework occasionally. When does the teacher assign homework? -- occasionally Yesterday we watched a movie. When did we watch a movie? --yesterday

Examples of adverbs that answer “to what extent?”
Our cat is extremely lazy. To what extent is our cat lazy? --extremely

Also, Adverbs often end in “ly” (but not always)

Why use adverbs? Adverbs make the action in a sentence more interesting.
