Newcastle College Rail Academy is located in Gateshead! It sits firmly in the Further Education sector, opened 2014 Ethos to educate 16 year olds, who by 18 are trained and ready to start work on the railway. (There are also mature entries into the rail sector, and others gaining more qualifications.) Impressive facilities Innovative approaches (E.g. night time track exercise )

What were the drivers? Rail Academy -Students need a 360 view of the sector - The Railway is about people - Even with an impending skills shortage, it is a competitive marketplace - Lecturers need current examples in their teaching

What were the drivers? Cross Country - Responsibility to work to lessen skills gap - With no stations, the company needs to be innovative to get their message out into the community - A strong ethos of social responsibility

TVCRP - Responsibility to work with education locally - Increasing desire within CRP sector to work with FE/HE - Responsibility to deliver rail safety message to communities - Need to access practical skills to link our railway and its communities, especially young people - Need to access industry skills to assist/provide first line help with projects

Signposting curriculum resources
Haltwhistle (Civil Eng students and bridges – plenty for a study day looking at different constructions and challenges for maintenance)
Blaydon (A station with no level access and no access from adjacent long distance path. Where should the new access go?)
Gilsland (What points can be used as curriculum learning?)

Making/Doing (potentially content for PSHE classes)
Haltwhistle – our lovely drawers in the wall of the booking office!
Northumberland County Show – design a game/activity/competition to attract show visitors to our stand

It is early days…but immediate impact Our launch was the launch for Rail Week - TVCRP publicity (Twitter feed, coverage on BBC Look North) - TVCRP networking (potential new board member) - Rail Academy (Filled last remaining places thanks to publicity) - Cross Country (Brand projected across news channels)
