Shifting Seasons The critical question for the follower of Jesus is not “am I happy?”, but “am I joyfully growing in my God given freedom?”.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here” (2 Corinthians 5:17) “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14) There was an undertone to the teaching that was concerning; it equated a failure to forget the past with a failure of faith in Jesus Christ.

“Some of us hide behind our faith to flee the pain of our lives rather than to trust God to transform us through it” (Peter Scazerro, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, pg. 102).

God will often use these wall-like experiences to re-orient our hearts toward Him, but this reorientation readily requires that we are stripped of those things we have placed our faith in apart from God.

Our experience of pain, unhappiness, and profound loss that is brought on by our experience of a wall in our faith, forces us to reconsider our attachment to things – either physical or emotional things – and plunges us into a new experience of God’s lavish love.

Judas Iscariot’s Encounter with a Spiritual Wall
Through the events of Passover in A.D. 33, Judas encountered a wall in his following of Jesus. Would he, by faith, push past this wall or would he allow this wall to redirect his path?

Pushing through spiritual walls permits us to grow in:
comfort with our own brokenness. comfort with mystery. comfort in waiting at the wall. comfort with a detachment from things.
