Social responses to risk taking
Adventure is important vs …..Senseless & dangerous Peoples response vary and relate to perceived rather than actual risk People respond to others engaging in what they perceive as risk-taking behaviour or to incidents in a variety of ways These responses relate to the way society responds and can lead to changes in the way we perceive, interact with and impact on OE.

Society is heavily influenced by how outdoor activities are portrayed by the media. Incidents are what is reported and they are often: Over-exaggerated & sensationalised Accounts can under & over emphasize different parts of the story Focus on risk vs risk management Focus on search & rescue ….costs to taxpayer Harm & trauma & grief of relatives Negligence, blame & inexperience These reports influence Society’s perception of appropriate level of risk
