1 Social responses to risk taking
Adventure is important vs …..Senseless & dangerous Peoples response vary and relate to perceived rather than actual risk People respond to others engaging in what they perceive as risk-taking behaviour or to incidents in a variety of ways These responses relate to the way society responds and can lead to changes in the way we perceive, interact with and impact on OE.

2 Society is heavily influenced by how outdoor activities are portrayed by the media. Incidents are what is reported and they are often: Over-exaggerated & sensationalised Accounts can under & over emphasize different parts of the story Focus on risk vs risk management Focus on search & rescue ….costs to taxpayer Harm & trauma & grief of relatives Negligence, blame & inexperience These reports influence Society’s perception of appropriate level of risk
