Chemicals for Printing

1) Choosing a Negative: Check your Contact Sheet
1) Choosing a Negative: Check your Contact Sheet! Look at exposure, composition, and lighting
10
2) Look CLOSER: Check for focus!
11
3)Prepare your enlarger!
Set your Easel to the size you want to print Insert your negative into negative carrier Check the height of your enlarger head Check your focus with the Focus Scope Set your Aperture to f/8 or f/5.6
12
4) Choose a filter: FILTERS CONTROL CONTRAST – THE DEGREE OF DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TONES (aka: BLACKS, WHITES, AND GRAYS)
13
A High Filter (3.5-5) has a very strong difference between shadows (blacks) and highlights (whites)
14
A Low Filter (0-1.5) has a wider range of grays between shadows and highlights
15
Somewhere in between (2-3) is usually a good filter to start
16
5) Make a Test Strip! (to figure out your exposure)
17
An exposure that’s too SHORT: No details in the highlights and no true black
18
An exposure that’s too LONG: No details in the shadows and no true white
19
A good print will have details in the highlights/shadows and have true black/white with a range of gray between.
