The Web of Knowledge has been enhanced in a number of areas. Find the changes grouped in this presentation by Search Features, Managing Results, Author Identification and Citation Counts.

3. WHAT’S NEW? SEARCH FEATURES
All terms are searched in Topic field; No stop words
Lemmatization – automatically helps find variations
Stemming for plurals, verb tenses, degrees of comparison (tooth/teeth)
British/US spelling variations (behavior/behaviour)
Left-hand truncation (*conductor = semiconductor)
NEAR/x operator (oil near/5 spill)
Web of Science New Search Features
Cited Reference Search – now search Volume, Page, or Issue number (+ direct links to records from hosted content)
Search full words in Address field (University, College, etc)
Search Author Name as published (for records from 2007+)
So, in summary, all terms in the topic field are searched – even very common words; there are no stop words. Lemmatization helps automatically find variants of your search terms. Left hand truncation is now allowed. The NEAR operator lets you specify the distance between your search terms . And all search results are returned, allowing for the most accurate set combinations and results analysis.

Article citation counts reflect the full picture of citation activity, now including data from the Web of Knowledge resources, Biosis Citation Index and the Chinese Science Citation Database. These numbers are comprehensive regardless of subscription, but links to citing items are dependent on your institution’s access. You can learn more about these additional citations by viewing our presentation “Citation Sources in the Web of Knowledge”.
You’ll also find newly added links to Web of Science Citing Articles, Cited References and Related Records in non-citation databases like Inspec and CABI.

7. Search Features: no stop words
The stop word list has been eliminated and common words like a, the, of, among others, can now be searched. This makes it possible to find articles on topics like Vitamin A and Down syndrome.

8. SEARCH FEATURES: LINGUISTIC SEARCH ASSISTANCE
Lemmatization and British/US English Examples:
frog/frogs
mouse/mice
color/colour
loud/louder/loudest
run/running/ran
Linguistic search assistance is now provided in keyword searching. Automatically expand your search results through the use of Lemmatization. ** When the feature is turned on the search engine will automatically look for variations of the terms I enter. Lemmatization looks for plural forms of nouns like mouse and mice, alternate verb tenses (run, running, ran), degrees of comparison for adjectives like loud/louder/loudest.
Turn lemmatization off and use truncation symbols if you want to more closely control what is searched.
The search engine also now automatically searches for many British and US English spelling variations – like color/colour.
To demonstrate lemmatization I’ve entered ** the phrase “best management practice” in the Topic field.

9. Search Features: Left-hand truncation and Near/operator

The use of the NEAR operator and left-hand truncation are now supported.
Here, I’ve selected the Topic field from the dropdown menu on the right. Topic searches article titles, abstracts and keywords. I’ve entered the term osmium and specified that I want it to appear within five words of the root term hydroxy. I’ve included the asterisk truncation symbol both before and after hydroxy.

10. Search Features: cited reference search
Cited fields for Volume, Issue and Page number have been added to the Cited Reference search interface. Keep in mind that searching these fields can be very helpful for narrowing down a search, but could also prevent the retrieval of citation variants if an article were cited incorrectly.

There are significant improvements to how results are managed within the Web of Knowledge.
-All results are now returned – the 100,000 record limit has been lifted.
-Results are now sorted by publication date by default rather than database entry date
-you can now preview abstracts right from the search results page
-when performing an All Databases search, you can now refine by database
-all results can be exported from the Analyze feature
-the Marked List has significant enhancements
-there is now one central marked list that is combined across databases
-the record limit has been expanded to 5,000 items to facilitate results analysis – you may still export up to 500 items at a time
-Use the analyze and citation report features with a custom set of Marked items
-links to full text are now available from the marked list
-and, view abstract previews and delete individual records from the list

12. Managing Results: all results returned, sorted by publication date
The 100,000 record limit for search sets has been lifted, enabling you to view the total number of search results. Search results are ordered by publication date by default, and there are several sort options to choose from.

13. Managing Results: abstract preview
Abstracts can now be previewed *anim* right from the search results page – there is no need to open the full record to view.

14. Managing Results: refine by database
Focus your All Databases searching by using the new Refine by Database option. Limit your results to specific resources within your subscription.

15. Managing Results: export all data from Analyze
Export all data when analyzing large sets of information – the on-screen analysis will display up to 500 items, but ALL data rows can be exported for use in other software.

16. Managing Results: Marked List enhancements
The Marked List now holds up to *anim* 5,000 items and is organized to allow you to manage by individual database or in one complete list.

17. Managing Results: Marked List enhancements
Both the *anim* Analyze Results feature and Citation Reports are now available for Marked List items, allowing you to create a custom set of articles and run analyses. Also view *anim* links to Full Text and abstract previews for marked List items. And finally, *anim* delete individual records by clicking the newly added delete button.

The Web of Knowledge provides new tools to help you disambiguate authors with common names and initials. -Web of Science is now integrated with Researcher ID, including a new field for searching an assigned Researcher ID number
-Author Finder has been enhanced to utilize the Distinct Author Sets clustering tool and refining capabilities.

19. Author Identification: ResearcherID
Researcher ID, Thomson Reuter’s online research community, and the Web of Science are now integrated. When an author identifies their work and associates it with their Researcher ID profile, it is tagged in the Web of Science. Searching their ID number retrieves any publications they have claimed as their own. *anim* Visit ResearcheriD.com for more information and to create or update your own profile.

20. Author Identification – Author Finder
The enhanced Author Finder tool now utilizes Distinct Author sets clustering to group records together algorithmically that are likely by one author. The last known institution associated with the items is shown and sets can be refined by subject area, institutions, and other fields.

With the addition of this new citation content, users will notice changes to article citation data as well as the display. *animation 1* This screen capture shows a sample article from the Web of Science. Cited reference and citing article information is found in two places in the record. ** animation 2** To the left you will see a citation count of 1,281, which reflects only citations from other Web of Science articles. On the right hand side ** animation 3** you will see a Cited By count which reflects citations from all Web of Knowledge citation sources. In this case, 1,320. Clicking on this will provide more information about the source of the citations.

23. Citing Articles
The Citing Articles display details where the citations to the article originated. The All Databases count gives you the total number of unique citing articles across the platform, then below that a count for each individual database. When each database count is added individually they total more than the All Databases number. This is because of overlap in journal coverage across the individual databases. These counts are complete, regardless of your subscription, so you are seeing the full picture of the citations to this item. You will only be able to follow links to items for which you have a subscription. For example, if my institution has access to the Chinese Science Citation Database, the link to those articles will be highlighted and I can click through to view them.
