Genomics as a Probe for Disease Biology Wylie Burke, M.D., Ph.D. N Engl J Med 2003; 349: Monday, , 1.30 pm This review article from NEJ underlines the importance of genetic research in understanding the pathalogical basis of disease. The article is available from the photocopier in the library or as a .pdf file on the SCM-Class of 2016 site. Regarding DNA mutations you should be able to: Classify different types of mutations (including nonsense, silent, missense and triplet repeat expansion, transitions and transversions) according to their effect on DNA sequence and protein structure Compare loss-of-function and gain-of-function mutations Differentiate between somatic and germ line mutations Differentiate between mutations and polymorphisms

This week all sessions except for the journal club on Monday, will be carried out as LGDs/LGISs
