Senior Project – Computer Engineering – 2012 A Patient‐Implantable Medical Records Storage Device Michael Szczesniak Advisor – Prof. Spinelli Abstract This project demonstrates the feasibility of some parts of a patient-implantable medical records storage and retrieval system. Rather than relying on external devices such as bracelets, a patient implantable system would store a substantial portion of a patient’s text-based medical records on flash memory, which could be wirelessly accessed by an authorized reader placed a few inches from the implanted device. This would allow medical care providers to access a patient’s medical history in an emergency. The system currently consists of two microcontrollers that communicate wirelessly. These microcontrollers contain transceivers for data transmission, as well as flash memory for non-volatile data storage, and are compact enough to be implantable. Additional work remains to be done to inductively power one of the microcontrollers over a short range in a way that would not damage surrounding tissue.
