attuned - (verb) to adjust one’s point of view to understand someone else’s. Men were so attuned to the Bird’s presence that they instantly recognized the clopping sound his clogs made in the sand. infraction – (noun) the violation or breaking of a rule or law. No sooner had Louie stepped outside than the Bird found him, accused him of an imaginary infraction, and attacked him in a wild fury. fixated – (verb) to focus intensely on something or someone. This crazy corporal was fixated on Louie, hunting the former Olympian. exodus – (noun) the departure of a large group of people The camp population was drastically diminished by the exodus. ravenous - (adj.) intensely or extremely eager for getting what is wanted. Sakaba was ravenous for promotion. flaunted – (verb) to display or to show off defiantly, or boldly. Bird flaunted his ability to get away with anything and virtually ran the camp. retribution – (noun) the act of punishing or taking vengeance for wrongdoing, sin, or injury No POW was foolish enough to answer truthfully, knowing the retribution that would follow. deference – (noun) a respectful yielding to the judgment, or opinion, of another Other prisoners warned Louie that he had to show deference or the Bird would never stop. escalation – (noun) to increase in intensity or magnitude Every escalation in the bombing brought a parallel escalation in the Bird’s attacks on Louie.
