1 English 1301 Week 2 – Day 3 January 25, 2018

2 Today’s Goals 1.) Workshop our ideas for our first project, the Mediated Values Essay. 2.) Answer the questions: What is Peer review and feedback? Where do I start?

3 ELIREVIEW ASSIGNMENTS were DUE BY CLASSTIME.
Eli review responses ELIREVIEW ASSIGNMENTS were DUE BY CLASSTIME.

4 ELI REVIEW ASSIGNMENTS ARE worth a huge chunk of your grade.
*REMINDER* ELI REVIEW ASSIGNMENTS ARE worth a huge chunk of your grade.

5 *REMINDER* If you did not do the responses to
“Feedback and Improvement” & “Rethinking and Revising” You are not starting off this semester strong. Do not let go of this 20%

6 My advice Remember: Late penalties are very severe. Please refer to the class syllabus, the discussion section policies form, and the “eli review assessment” sheet for more information on how grading is handled. Still … it’s better to get some kind of partial credit than to take a zero. (It also depends on how late you turn in an assignment.) If you have not completed the two Responses to the eli review articles, I highly recommend doing so by the end of today. Keep in mind that Your grade, however, will be lowered due to late submission.

7 Eli review assessment: a reminder
Taken from the sheet found on blackboard:

8 Free Writing “Feedback and Improvement” –
list 1 or 2 things you read in this article that you either agreed or disagreed with regarding practice, qualities of helpful feedback, or the describe-evaluate-suggest method. explain why you agreed or disagreed. (You can also write down any questions you had about the article.) “Rethinking and Revising” – list 1 or 2 things you read in this article that you either agreed or disagreed with regarding Selecting feedback, the growth mindset, or the making time for revision. explain why you agreed or disagreed. (You can also write down any questions you had about the article.)

9 Common Questions & Concerns
I don’t know how to give feedback. Where do I start?

10 Describe-Evaluate-Suggest
Describe the claim by summarizing the relevant passage (What did the passage say in your own words?) … say what you see as a reader. Evaluate - Explain how the text meets or does not meet the criteria established in the prompt. Suggest - offer concrete advice for improvement.

11 Describe-Evaluate-Suggest
When we give constructive, respectful, and specific helpful feedback that describes, evaluates and suggests, we want to help writers understand: What they accomplished by being descriptive about what we see; How what they accomplished compares to what they were asked to accomplish by referencing the goals of the draft; What they must do next by offering specific advice about what they can do to improve. These strategies won’t guarantee that our feedback is helpful. But, it’s a good frame to use as we practice.

12 When giving peer feedback …
Ignore grammar and mechanics. Copyedits are surface-level changes—spelling, grammar, syntax—that are best left until the last stage of the writing process, after revision is mostly complete. These sentence- level comments have the narrow goal of correction.

13 How to Provide Good, Constructive Criticism: Step 1
Avoid using the language “I liked” or “I didn’t like.” Rather, articulate how or why something pleases you or does not please you about the author’s essay. Be specific. For instance: “You are certainly on track for writing a good thesis statement. That said, I think you could improve your thesis statement by….”

14 How to Provide Good, Constructive Criticism: Step 2
Use the “describe-evaluate-suggest” method of constructive criticism. Instead of saying, “Your discussion of audience and purpose is boring and difficult to follow.” using “describe-evaluate-suggest” you could say, “Your introductory paragraph meets the majority of the criteria specified on the prompt, but the discussion of audience and purpose could improve. For example, you mention that the article is targeting a general audience. Instead, you can narrow down your audience to one specific group of people. Try to answer this question, “Who is this author trying to target with his article?” refocusing your discussion of audience will help you be more specific with your otherwise good ideas!” Be fair and charitable, but honest. Ignoring obvious flaws will neither help your grade nor aid your peer.

15 Brainstorming Activity
For class on Thursday, Jan 25, you will bring to class a paper with the following information: 1.) Make a list with three of your most favorite pieces of media (Possible media may include: books, magazines, television shows, blogs, movies, songs, albums, a video game, artists, etc.) 2.) Write a paragraph for EACH of the 3 things you selected. You must answer the following question in your paragraph: How has this particular piece of media helped shape my values? (Remember: be specific with your values.)

16 Describe-Evaluate-Suggest
Describe the claim by summarizing the relevant passage (What did the passage say in your own words?) … say what you see as a reader. Evaluate - Explain how the text meets or does not meet the criteria established in the prompt. Suggest - offer concrete advice for improvement.

17 The mediated values essay: Now what?
A guideline (or checklist) of things to do: 1.) Did the writer Identify and discuss a specific piece of media important to him/her? Note: Specific media is something like Sims 2. If the writer simply lists “video games” as a piece of media, that is not specific enough. 2.) Did the writer Identify and discuss a specific value he/she holds that this media has helped shape? Note: simply listing a value like “justice,” “freedom,” or “love” is too broad. For example, some values are so broad that they can become muddled and nearly meaningless, like freedom; a better approach to freedom might focus more specifically on a type or aspect of freedom, like the ability to make decisions about one’s own body or the ability to challenge an authority figure. 3.) Did the writer Use specific details, including personal experiences, to explore the relationship between this media and this value? Note: For this part, think back to the readings from Tuesday. each author’s experience with either Stranger Things, x- men, or the encyclopedia shaped their values in some way. There is a relationship between values and one’s experiences. 4.) Did the writer Show a degree of analysis (that is, it does not just describe, but reflects on and analyzes his/her experiences or the media he/she is discussing)?

18 Minimum expectations & requirements
Your essay should conform to these guidelines: Be a minimum of 1 page single-spaced and not exceed 2 pages (roughly 500 words) Be written in a readable, 11–12 pt. font Have a title that is inviting to your readers (your classmates) Identify and discuss a specific piece of media important to you Identify and discuss a specific value you hold that this media has helped to shape Use specific details, including personal experiences, to explore the relationship between this media and this value Show a degree of analysis (that is, it does not just describe, but reflects on and analyzes your experiences or the media you’re discussing) Be effectively organized, use clear language, and be carefully edited This essay will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. On-time submission of a satisfactory essay that meets the above guidelines will result in an A.

19 For homework: For Monday, Jan 29, by 8:00 a.m. 1.) Read: “Ancient Rhetorics: Their Differences and the Differences They Make” 2.) On eli Review: Review Responses to “Feedback and Improvement” & “Rethinking and Revising” - (Use the describe-evaluate-suggest method). For Tuesday, Jan 30, by class time: 1.)
