5.3: Slope-Intercept Form
2
Slope-Intercept Form Linear Function:
The graph of this function is a STRAIGHT LINE. A FAMILY of functions is a group of functions with common characteristics. A PARENT function is the simplest function with these characteristics. The linear parent function is y = x or f (x) = x
3
The Slope-Intercept Form
The equation of line in the slope-intercept form: represents the _________. represents the _______________. y-intercept is where the line crosses the y-axis SLOPE Y-INTERCEPT
4
Example 2- What are the slope and y-intercept of the following equations?
a.) b.) c.) m = m = m = b = b = b =
5
Example 3- Find the equation of the line with a y-intercept of 1 and a slope 3.
6
Example 4 – What is the equation of the lined graphed at the right?
What is the y-intercept?_______ What is the slope? ______ Equation:
7
Writing an Equation from Two Points
STEPS: 1) Find the SLOPE of the line. 2.) Use the slope and one of the coordinates to find b. 3.) Substitute the slope and the y-intercept into the slope- intercept form to write the equation.
8
Example 5: Find the equation for the line passing through (3, −4) and (9, 0).
Slope: Substitute Point: Equation: _____________
9
Graphing a Linear Equation
Example 6: Graph the equation 1.) Plot the y-intercept. 2.) Use the slope to move vertically and then horizontally. 3.) Draw a line through the two points.
