1851. A south eastern portion of New South Wales is separated and becomes the colony of Victoria. Van Diemen's Land changes its name to Tasmania in 1856.

The Federal Capital Territory (now called the ACT – Australian Capital Territory) is created within New South Wales. On the same day the northern half of South Australia is given to the Commonwealth, and renamed the Northern Territory.
