4. VfW: The impact of WW1
Both suffragettes + suffragists stopped campaigning when the war started
Women quickly moved into office jobs left vacant by men who had gone to fight
Women were not initially allowed into industrial jobs (working on machines; making bombs etc)
By 1916 big labour shortages meant this changed… and by 1918 nearly 1m women were in industrial jobs.
The popular view was now that women should be rewarded for their war work
In 1917 the Government introduced the Representation of the People Bill. This would give the vote to men fighting overseas AND all women over 30 AND women over 21 who owned a house or were married to a house owner
The bill was agreed in the Commons by a 7 to 1 majority, and in the Lords by 63 votes
It became law in 1918
In 1928 women were finally granted fully equal voting rights with men
