Figure 1 Developmental Neuronal Apoptosis Induces Microglial Colonization of the Brain Microglial colonization in the embryonic zebrafish brain is induced by brain neuronal apoptosis. Under normal condition (center), developmental neuronal death (red) induces the entry of microglial precursors (dark green) into the brain. Reduction (left) or enhancement (right) of neuronal death in the brain can decrease or increase the number of the microglia in the developing brain, respectively. In situ proliferation (light green) of invading microglia also contributes to the establishment of the microglial pool in the brain.
