Evaluate Substitute the rational number they give you for the corresponding variable in the expression. 5A + B A = 4 and B = 8 So 5 (4) + 8 = = 28 Turn to page 166 in your Textbook.

5
Commutative Property The sum of two numbers is the same no matter which order is used to add them. a + b = b + a 3 + 7 = 7 + 3 Also applies to multiplication. A * B = B * A
6
Associative Property The sum of three numbers is the same whether you group the first two numbers or the second two numbers. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) (3 + 7) + 5 = 3 + (7 + 5) Also applies to multiplication. (3 * 7) * 5 = 3 * (7 * 5)
7
Distributive Property
To multiply a number by a sum of two terms, you can multiply that number by each term and add the two products. a(b + c) = ab + ac 3(7 + 5) = 3*7 + 3*5
