Strength (S) or Weakness (W) of the United Nations?
The UN is the only organisation in the world that has the moral authority to speak for the world. It can condemn the worst atrocities and bring lots of countries together because of the values it represents. The UN does valuable work in its agencies but that could be done by other non-governmental organisations like the big charities. The UN does not have its own money and cannot borrow money from banks. It relies on member countries who sometimes won’t pay up. The permanent members of the Security Council have the right of veto. So one of these can prevent the UN from taking action. And it is often very difficult to get them to agree. The UN does tremendous work all over the world and has saved millions of lives. It is because it is the UN that it gets a lot of support and is not seen to be taking sides. The UN has no army. It relies on governments to supply troops for peacekeeping operations. Sometimes they are unwilling to do this and sometimes the soldiers have not been properly trained. The UN has failed in its main aim to keep peace. If countries want to ignore it, they do. Add one of your own thoughts…. Ss sort into ‘strengths’ and ‘weaknesses’
