Manufacturing Assembly
Made in Florida - industry tours
2
Build it best! Imagine you own a manufacturing pencil company and you have been asked to make 100 mechanical pencils in the shortest amount of time possible. Think about a strategic manufacturing plan. Which assembly steps will you use? Share ideas with your partner. Share with the class. Students should focus on the assembly of parts/ production and quality. Assume that other important manufacturing processes are done; ie. Design of mechanical pencil, acquisition & processing the raw materials.
3
Bell work Day 1: Assembly Line
List at least 5 products you think are made using an assembly line process.
4
Words to Know Assembly line is a process in which parts are added in sequence until the final assembly of a product is produced. Manufacturing is the process of changing material into products that people can use. Crude - constructed in a rudimentary or makeshift way. Standardized - to conform to a certain level of quality. Innovation - the action/process of innovating or making changes in something established, by introducing new methods, ideas, or products. Productivity - the state or quality of producing something. Specialization - the act of specializing; making something suitable for a specific purpose. Monotonous - dull, tedious, and repetitious; lacking in variety and interest.
5
Words to Know Leisure - free time.
Hydraulics - the conveyance of liquids through pipes and channels. Precise - marked by exactness and accuracy of expression or detail. Efficiency - achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense. Economy is the state of a country or region in terms of the production and consumption of goods and services and the supply of money. Quality is a measure of excellence or a state of being free from defects, deficiencies and significant variations. Reliable refers to someone or something that can be trusted Efficient is the ability to act or produce something with a minimum of waste, expense or unnecessary effort.

NOW… READ THE ARTICLES AND MARK YOUR TEXT Mark “H” if the text is describing the history of assembly lines Mark “M” if the text is describing modern methods or new technology Mark “E” if the text is referencing making things more efficient.
7
Questions From the text
Which two factors allowed Henry Ford to reduce the cost of production? How did the assembly line change the way people worked and lived? What new technological innovations have made manufacturing even more efficient? Stop presentation-End of Day 1
8
Bell work Day 2 Based on your company profile research and the article you read. Write one question you plan to ask on the tour to help you gain further understanding of the company's use of robotics. Day 2 of 4 days
9
On your trip While you are on your tour, complete the directed note- taking activity. Bring your observations back to class for discussion and review. Recommendations before the tour (day 3)
10
Bell work Day 4: A Reflection
Which of the assembly line processes you observed, increased efficiency at the company you toured?
11
Discussion Day 4 Which machines or technologies made the assembly of products faster or easier? How do new machines, like robots, create changes to the assembly line in manufacturing products?
12
Discussion Review your notes from the tour Discuss your observations with your team and class Day 4
13
Reflection and observations
Write a reflection essay using evidence from the article text, your tour observations and classroom discussions. How do new machines, like robots, create changes to the assembly line in manufacturing products? Day 4
