Early education of children was almost all through private schools

Public education began to be expanded around 1840
This included extending public education to girls But public schools in DC lagged far behind the public education systems in New England and the West In 1840, two-thirds of DC’s school-age children were not in school

Black children were excluded from the public schools by law Several free schools for blacks were established by wealthy and committed individuals, but could only accommodate a small percentage of the free black population
