What are simple machines?
Name some machines people use. (lawn mower, stapler, hole puncher) Scientists call a machine: anything that helps us do work. Work is done any time a force is used to move an object some distance. A simple machine is a device that has few parts and makes it easier to do a task. What are simple machines?

Levers A lever has two parts-a bar and a fixed point called a fulcrum.
The fulcrum supports the bar and allows it to turn, or pivot. There are 3 kinds of levers: first-class, second-class, and third- class. Levers

9
Load and Effort Force To explain how levers work, scientists call the object being moved the LOAD. The force that is used to do the work is called the EFFORT FORCE. A lever doesn’t make you stronger, it changes the effort you use to move the load.

A wheel and axle has two parts
A wheel and axle has two parts. One part is a wheel and the other is an axle (which is a bar that passes through the wheel’s center). Wheels and axles help you move things with a small amount of force. The wheel hangs on to the axle and when a force is applied to the axle, it turns the wheel. Wheel and Axle

Fixed Pulleys A fixed pulley makes it easier to lift a load.
The wheel is attached to something and it can’t change positions. One end of the rope is passed around the wheel and the other end is tied to the load. Pulling the rope lifts the load. Fixed Pulleys

14
Moveable Pulleys It is not attached to a fixed object.
It moves in the same direction as the load. A moveable pulley reduces the effort needed to lift a load. The load is on a moveable pulley and the rope runs through both. You pull the rope far away to lift the weight a small distance. Moveable Pulleys

An inclined plane is a simple machine with one part-a flat, slanted surface.
The machine holds up most of the load’s weight. Inclined planes can be found at the corner’s of sidewalk and entranced of buildings. Inclined Plane

A screw is an inclined plane twisted into a spiral.

Compound Machine Two or more simple machines make a compound machine.
Scissors, for example, are made of two wedges. Compound Machine
