The environment Ecologists study biodiversity They want to know:
Where an organism is found (distribution) The number of that organism present (population) Sample serval small sections to give representation

Pooters To catch small insects.
The user breathes in through the mouthpiece which has a piece of net covering the end. The insects are sucked into the holding chamber via the inlet tube.

Sweep nets Sweep nets are used in areas of long grass to catch organisms. They can also be used in ponds.

Tree beating The beating tray is held under a tree or shrub and the foliage is then shaken or beaten with a stick. Insects fall from the plant and land on the cloth.

Quadrats Quadrats are square frames of a known size eg 1 m2.
They are used to sample all the plant species in a particular area.
