2 Need for reform, KS is going to lead by example!
Ch. 8 Reform Movements The Gilded Age Term created by Mark Twain, used it for the title of one of his novels. Symbolized materialism & corruption. Industrialization brings major profits. Rich continued to get richer. No income or inheritance tax Need for reform, KS is going to lead by example!

3 Ch. 8 Reform Movements Prohibition Temperance Movement
Abuse of alcohol became a major concern. Saloons (Bars) grew in popularity Kept men from their families Caused people to misbehave Temperance Movement Group who wanted people to abstain from the use of alcohol, or at least drink in moderation. Others wanted to prohibit the sale of alcohol in public places. Some wanted to prohibit all intoxicating beverages. Mostly led by women. Kansas outlaws the manufacture or sale of alcohol. First state to do so.

Hard to enforce new prohibition laws. Loophole allowed alcohol to be sold for medicinal purposes. Kansans also made their own alcohol as home. Carrie A. Nation Lecturer and local leader for Women’s Christian Temperance Movement in Medicine Lodge. Grew tired of people ignoring Prohibition Laws. Began to destroy saloons all over the state. Used stones, bricks , and a hatchet. Sold small pins in the shape of hatchets to raise money for her jail fines.

5 Ch. 8 Reform Movements Women’s Suffrage
KS was a leader in the fight for equal rights for women. Early push in KS statehood for universal suffrage. Would have given African American’s and Women the right to vote. First attempt in U.S. history. Shifted attention from full suffrage to partial suffrage. Focused on the right to vote in city elections. Took 2 years but was finally passed. First state to do so.

National movement that is associated with farmers. Most successful third-party political movement in U.S. history. Believed the government should represent workers, not big business. Ideas Breakup monopolies Income tax, rich pay more Limit government revenue Government takes ownership of railroad, telegraph, telephone Use secret ballots for elections, allow people to elect senators

7 Ch. 8 Reform Movements Socialism Movement
Angered that American wealth was in the hands of a few. Wanted equal distribution of wealth among all classes. Ideas Better working conditions: Shorter days, safer conditions, child labor laws, equal wages Government ownership of railroads, telegraphs, telephones Prohibiting the waste of natural resources Income tax, wealthier pay more Free education to all children Government work program for unemployed.
