2 When did Lujan-Chavez open it’s doors to students?
Lujan-Chavez Elementary School opened in July 2001, to serve half the population of students who attended Helen Ball Elementary School previously. We share our facility with Sun Ridge Middle School.

3 Where did the name Lujan-Chavez come from?
Our school was named after two Veteran’s who went to Socorro schools.

4 Alvaro Lujan Received Purple Heart Died in 1945
Originally buried in Bastro, Belguim Now buried at the Socorro Mission Private Alvaro Lujan received the Purple Heart for his bravery in World War II. He died in He was originally buried in Bastro, Belgium. He is now buried in the cemetery at the Socorro mission.

36th artillery division In 1945 sent to Italy Swept for landmines and hidden underground bombs Died when he was 29 years old Sgt. Luis Escajeda Chavez was a soldier in World War II. He was in the 36th artillery division. In 1945, he was stationed in Salerno, Italy where he was killed while sweeping for landmines. He was 29 years old.

The Purple Heart is an Honor for a common soldier wounded or killed in battle. This military decoration is difficult to obtain.
